I am done

Guy Fieri crossed the line of rude behavior to a very dear friend. I am appalled at his insolence and am done being ... a fan of Guy Fieri.

Guy Fieri on David Letterman Wednesday, 1/28

The Press Democarat in Scramento had this to say:

THE DAVE & GUIDO SHOW: One of red-hot TV star Guy Fieri’s goals, you may recall, is to one day host “Saturday Night Live.” The Sonoma County restaurateur and Food Network celeb is getting closer.

On Wednesday, he’ll appear on Late Show with David Letterman. Watch for Guy, who just celebrated his 41st birthday with family and friends here at home, to bring Dave some treats.

The internet was all ablaze in September, 2009, when Guy Fieri was spotted sitting next to Bill Shatner at SNL's season premiere.

At the end of the show when all the performers are on stage waving goodbye to the camera that Guy Fieri had to get out of his seat and shake hands with a member of Lil Wayne's entourage.

Diner Speak

When Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives first hit the Food Network in April of 2007, Guy Fieri slipped into pop culture with his 30-second promo spot for the show - ordering from a diner waitress completely in diner speak.

Here's a link to the video of that commercial.

According to Wikipedia:
Adam & Eve on a raft - two poached eggs on toast
Shingle with a shimmy and a shake - buttered toast with jam or jelly, hence the reference to 'shake'.
Zeppelins in a fog - sausages and mashed potatoes
Pin a rose on it - add onion to an order

Given the opportunity, I'll order a Bossy in a bowl, Eve with a lid on and a Blonde with sand, and I'm good.

Happy Birthday Guy Fieri !!

It's Guy Fieri's birthday today - I've read it's also known as Festivus, an annual week-long series of parties. I haven't heard how he's celebrating this year, but I found a You Tube video of Guy doing shots.

So Guy, here's to you and another year of health and success.

Guy Fieri on Cardinal / Steeler superbowl food

View Full Clip

I'm not a fan of Steve Somers' voice, but I am a fan of Guy's food. Here Guy Fieri talks about "Super Bowl foods representing both the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers." FanFoodie suggests, "when you click play, you can skip the jibber-jabber and get right to the ... meat by skipping to the second arrow on the status bar."

Ask the Guac Doc

For Superbowl Sunday, it's all about the Guac.

Guy Fieri solves your guacamole dip dilemmas on FoodNetwork.com here, answering questions like:

What type of avocado makes the best guacamole? How do I choose avocados at the grocery store? How can I tell when an avocado is ripe? How do I cut up an avocado? And what is in classic guacamole? How can I make the ingredients shine?

Enter the Guac of Fame Contest here. Upload a photo of your guacamole and tell FoodNetwork.com why your guacamole should reign supreme. If your dip dominates the competition, you could win a signed copy of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives book.

Try Guy Fieri's Guacamole recipe, part of his No Can Beato This Taquito:

Guacamole
3 ripe avocados, peeled and seeded
1 jalapeno, seeded, minced
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/4 cup diced tomato
1/2 bottle of your favorite beer
4 tablespoons sour cream
1 lime, juiced
Small handful cilantro leaves, about 1/4 cup
Salt and pepper
Place all ingredients in a blender and puree.

Guy Fieri interview on WMGK radio

Click here to hear an interview with Guy Fieri on 102.9 WMGK radio in Philadelphia.

Guy Fieri speaks about Ultimate Recipe Showdown. He talks about Marc Summers, who is not involved with URS this season, the Food Network, FoodNetwork.com and how to enter your recipe for the third season of URS. And also explains why he is on the TGIF commercials, a bit of a surprise to the radio hosts.

Guy also visits a bit about Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and answers a few common questions about the show's production. He also mentions his recent visit to the Dallas area.

While in Dallas, these fine folks were at the DDD taping for the Twisted Root Burger Company in Deep Ellum, TX.

He was exactly the same "Guy" you see on the show. Funny, friendly and down to earth. We did get to talk (to Guy) for a bit and he is exactly the same guy as on TV. Very funny and friendly and demonstrative. I don't think we're on camera at any point but it was still fun to meet him and watch them tape and support our buddies at Twisted Root. Thanks to Jason Boso and Quincy Hart of TRBC for having us in to watch the taping!

And thank you, ThornMonkey, for letting me use your photos!

News Spot and Feedback from URS

Better TV interviews Guy Fieri behind the scenes for Ultimate Recipe Showdown.

Diana Davis, from the Comfort Food category, had this to say:

Guy is a really wonderful person, and being on the same set with him was such a thrill! He really is the nice, interesting, and funny person you see on the screen. He gives everyone the feeling that he is honestly interested in what they say.

Can you tell me what it was about your interactions with Guy that gave you the impression he is honestly interested in what people say? I agree with you on that topic, and am interested in how you came to the same conclusion.

First, the way he talks to you. Guy looks you right in the eye when you are talking to him. And then he asks you questions, and maybe makes comments. You can tell he really is interested in people. This is what makes him a good host, and probably such a success in the food business. People want to be around him, because he makes us all feel he wants to be around us.

People are drawn to a REAL person!

On meeting Guy Fieri, did he have any words of wisdom, encouragement or advice for you before, during or after the taping?

Guy really calmed me down, and helped me relax. HE let us know to have fun, to let things happen, to just get in there and be ourselves. I was so into having a good time, I wasn't nervous at all when we started, even when the butter went kapoof!

Did you walk away from your experience with any momentos? Autographs or pictures you'd care to share?

I brought a silver paint pen, and since they let us keep our aprons, I had Guy, Rick Masa and some of the amazing test kitchen wizards sign it. We got two, so I have the signed one, and an unsigned one I use in the kitchen. I still have my polenta cutter, and it is so useful-polenta, bananas, butter and such. I'll send you some pictures soon!

Other comments?

He's just warm and wonderful, which is why I guess he has been such a success! What is it now, three shows? Four? Five?

Four, but who's counting ....
lol

It was one of the most fun things I have ever done! What a lucky person I was for being able to do it.

Guy Fieri headed to Washington State for DDD

Guy Fieri will visit the Southern Kitchen restaurant, 1716 6th Avenue in Tacoma, WA, for next week's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives itinerary, January 24 and 25, 2009. Owner Gloria Martin says she’s been haggling since October with Page Productions, based in Minnesota, which produces the show.

There is a list at Southern Kitchen for those who want to vie for a chance to visit the restaurant during taping. Martin says she has been swamped preparing for the visit, saying she’s getting her hair done for the shoot and will be preparing fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, cornbread dressing and jalapeno poppers for the show.

TGIF photo shoot

Found this while searching around for information on Ultimate Recipe Showdown.

Josh Rose photographed Guy Fieri for his TGIF images in late November, 2008. And a big thank you to him for making these images available.

Obviously the shot above doesn't suit for the energetic, frenetic image Guy is known for, nor what TGIF would be looking for to promote a you-should-be-seen-here eatery. But damn, it's a great shot. So much character.

See more at images from the shoot at behance.net. See creative commons for photo-sharing properties.

I like this one too. Something just makes me want to add a baloon above, "I'm gonna getchya." And I think, "yeah ok."

In October of 2008, Bob Tuschman (Senior Vice President, Programming and Production) had this to say about Guy's live shows:

Guy has wanted to do an audience show since he started on air. In fact, the show he pitched when he won The Next Food Network Star was called “Off the Hook,” but we changed it to “Guy’s Big Bite.” Last February, I sat in the audience at the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival (2008) and watched Guy as he tore up the house — a funny, electrifying, interactive cooking demo in front of hundreds of fans. I knew then he was ready. We taped a first season of (Guy Off the Hook), 6 episodes to test out the concept, so let me know what you think.

Looks like Guy's heading to Mexico !

Guy Fieri mentioned in a recent interview that he'll visit Cabo to tape a grilling special for the Food Network with Sammy Hagar. But he didn't mention this:

Guy Fieri interview at KSRO

KSRO The Drive

Guy stopped by KSRO radio in Santa Rosa for a brief 10-minute visit, full of energy, and even more full of information. Here are a few highlights *not* mentioned elsewhere in my blog:

*This interview was the Friday before Guy flew to Texas to begin shooting the 8th season of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. We, out here in TV land, will begin seeing the 6th season of that show in February.

*Last year he was away, working, 210 days out of the year. Guy has just signed a 4-year contract with the Food Network, working 120 days this next year.

*Guy credits his managers and team members for maintaining the restaurants in his absence; credit goes first to his wife, family, business partner Steve and CFO Amy, empowering him to do the work he needs to do. They are now looking at Las Vegas and other large metropolitan areas to open new restaurants.

*Guy is writing 500 or 600 recipes a year now. (I'm lucky if I write 5 or 6)

*Guy has four shows on the Food Network, which he felt was daunting. There is some debate between which will go forward next year, Guy's Big Bite or Guy Off the Hook. (Oh, I have a preference!! I really do! Dare I even say?)

*Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is the #1 show on Food Network. (?!?)

*Guy is looking forward to going to Cabo Wabo soon (when?), to shoot a grilling special for the Food Network with Sammy Hagar.

*In March he'll shoot 30 shows in 10 days, at the Food Network Studios in New York.

*In May, Guy will go to Iraq in his second effort towards supporting American troops. They will fly into Baghdad and travel to 10 cities. He's ordering 5000 pounds of pork towards that effort. (unreal)

*Guy is forming the "Guy Fieri Foundation," with a goal of fostering kids imaginations and dreams with mentorship.

Critique of TGIF tie-in with Food Network and URS-2

I found this to be a very interesting article - paraphrased here:

Pairing Food with Franchise - Tessa Wegert, Jan 8, 2009

When the show debuted last February, (TGI Friday's) announced it would be featuring the winning recipes on its menu for restaurant-going viewers to judge for themselves. The Friday's "Ultimate Recipe Showdown" menu is back. And this time, it comes with a nice selection of online media.

To promote its connection to the show, Friday's has established a presence on the Food Network site ....

Where Friday's could have done better is in its selection of page placements on foodnetwork.com. The chain has the "Ultimate Recipe Showdown" section covered with a sponsorship. That's a no-brainer. Given that its spokesperson-slash-Food Network chef also hosts two other unrelated shows, however, placing additional banners in those sections of the site would have been a stealthy move.

Like many TV chefs, Fieri has a big personality. Viewers will either love him or hate him, without much in between. And if they love him, they'll love him on his other shows as well. What a perfect chance for Friday's to expand its reach and up the odds of reaching potential customers by covering more Fieri-related pages.

Contextually, there's no connection between, say, "Guy's Big Bite" and the custom menu at Friday's. But Guy represents a common ground that's just as likely to be traversed by a new or already loyal customer as the site section that overtly promotes "Ultimate Recipe Showdown."

Guy Fieri is all over Texas, for DDD

Texas is all a-buzz this week with Guy Fieri sightings and DDD camera crews up, down and all around, with tapings starting Monday, January 5, 2009 and winding up on Friday the 9th.

GuyFieri.com

I am sure anyone who is a fan of Guy Fieri has visited his website. I've noticed that the graphic layout has changed in recent months, and that many of the links have been 'under construction' for quite some time.

I visited GuyFieri.com today, and found that the majority of links and pages have been updated and are now working.

... including ...

A link to a full, updated and interactive map of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I'm not too proud to say that with the encouragement of husband and friends, I played a part in making that happen. Thank you Mr. Hoekenga!

Here are a few of my comments on what else I see on that website.
1. Buy Gear: Good that the gear is there; I'm sure it appeals to many, but I won't buy any of it. Sorry Guy!
"Kulinary Krew" - it is a pet peeve of mine when people purposefully misspell words. Blame it on an over-exuberant 7th grade English teacher, and I'm too old to change my pet peeves. I similarly refused to send my children to a nearby daycare called Kids Kastle for the same reason. The word "krew," I could understand if it was spelled "krewe," a group with hereditary membership whose members organize and participate as costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival. "Culinary Krewe" I would buy.
"Knuckle Sandwich" - a euphemism for a punch in the face. No thank you.
"Food Fite" - Misspelled, more violence. Thank you, but I'll decline.

2. Get to know Guid: Good page, nice bio, my kids have fun changing his look. But as much as I snooped around, I found no "inside 'dish' on yours truly, the people in my Krew, some of the people I meet."

3. G-TV: looks new. The Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives font doesn't match the other two shows, but look at me being picky. And where's Ultimate Recipe Showdown? It's current, hot and missing from his website. I should also think this is where some video should be. Pick some favorite clips off You Tube and embed. Right? Maybe even change up the videos once a month, just to keep things fresh.

4. Food: I like this. I like this a lot. So far the once-a-month recipes are a cocktail and two veggie dishes. The cocktail I get, but veggies from Guy? Let's hope February's installment is a meat dish, big n bold cooked low n slow. Perhaps he can try Dorable's Pot Roast! haha

5. Email Sign Up: Under Construction?

6. Contact Us: Perhaps the site's page most in need of development, of which Hoekenga Design and Guy are well aware. At today's writing, the Guest Book hasn't been updated in two months. Why? They are just plain too busy to approve the multitude of posts. And that's too bad. If a fan takes the time to compose a thoughtful comment and submit it, only to see day after day that comment hasn't posted after several weeks go by, one loses hope. And faith. And that's sad.

I think it may also be helpful for a brief explanation of what an "agent" is and does, and what a "press inquiry" is. Those in the biz know, but the rest of us do not.

7. Events: Nice! And new too, I believe. Incomplete, however, as I see Rock Fantasy Camp is missing. And websites for more information on these events would be handy too.

8. Media Kit: Lovely. Something I'll never need, but nice to have it there.

Were I in charge of the world (heaven forbid) I would add one more page to GuyFieri.com. I would call it "Show Me Your Grill!" - a place where fans could upload pictures of their perhaps brief meeting at a restaurant, book signing or elsewhere. I see these all over, on MySpace, personal blogs, Facebook, all over. Fans would love to know that he's seen the result of that quick flash of bulb. And I think, were I Guy, I'd want to see that too, the pride, the joy and happiness showing in the faces of these fans. hmmm?

Speaking of all over, there are currently 5 "Guy Fieri's" on MySpace and 2 "Guy Fieri's" on Facebook. Real, any of them? Bah.

Guy Fieri, on Holiday Comfort Food and Burgers

Ultimate holiday comfort food? I had thirty six people. I was camping with my dirt bikes and my kids, my wife, my buddies, and all of that stuff. I had to cook dinner for thirty people in a Weber on a mountain in the cold.

Turkey: I did three different turkeys this year, but I brined the turkey. I did a maple syrup/bourbon brine turkey. I am telling you, it tasted just like ham. It was out of this world. So me, what’s my favorite turkey or holiday food? To me it’s rolling it out and doing something different.

Gravy: I took all of the legs and wings off of my turkeys, because no one ever eats them, and made all of my gravy out of them. I made two gallons of "gravy a la gravy". I made so much gravy you could have gravy as soup.

Christmas: I did a twenty eight day aged prime rib for Christmas this time. I dry aged it in fridge in my garage, so I had about a thirty percent loss. But you want to talk about incredible.

Healthier comfort food? Well, here’s my belief on that, and I think that’s right on point. It’s the same thing with alcohol. It’s not quantity, it’s quality. So I don’t really think you should cheat the mac and cheese. Mac and cheese needs killer cheese; it needs some cream, you know. It needs good pasta.

Portions: ... maybe we just don’t eat ten ounces of it; maybe we’re only getting four of it this time. So I would rather go to a smaller portion and stay with quality than go to a larger portion and not have the quality in it. I think it’s quality not quantity. And let’s just realize this: chicken fried steak is probably not the healthiest thing that you can enjoy, but in moderation it is what it is.

The ultimate burger? Well, I think using great meat, seasoning properly and cooking with high heat.

Meat: The first thing I would have to say is really good meat, fresh ground meat. I think it makes the difference of a lifetime. You know, it’s funny. People say, ‘We don’t want all of the fat’ that’s used in ten grind, you know, ten percent meat and ninety percent fat, and then they slather on mayonnaise. It’s kind of going backwards.

Seasoning: I think over seasoning a burger, like putting too many components to it can also be the issue.

Heat: I think cooking the burger and messing with the burger is probably the biggest flaw. Anytime you hear sizzling, that’s usually juice or fat or some liquid coming out of it, which creates this opportunity for it to be dry.

But I really believe a dynamite, a really well made burger needs a fantastic bun, a fresh tomato, a nice big slice of some red onion, some good crunchy romaine lettuce, maybe a little bit of a whole grain mustard and that’s it, baby! It has all of its own flavor in there.

Even Non-Fieri-Fans Are Fans of Dry Aged Beef

Review of Dry-Aged Beef

Kit Pollard, of the Baltimore Food Fun Examiner had this to say:
In a burst of extreme ambition, my parents dry-aged a prime rib for Christmas Eve dinner. The meat spent 10 days in their basement refrigerator and when it came out, it really did have an ugly crust. But a bit of a trim, plus a peppery rub and a few hours in the oven turned it into one of the best pieces of meat I've had in a long time. Don't be fooled by the fact that the recipe comes from Guy Fieri (who I generally want to throttle) - it was excellent.

Recipe: Dry Aged Prime Rib Roast

At the time of this writing, there are 24 reviews on FoodNetwork.com for this recipe, with a 4.8 / 5 star rating. Yes, it's that good.

On Upcoming Episodes of DDD

Two pizza places have announced they'll be featured on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives in upcoming months.

La Piazza al Forno in Glendale, AZ.

Guy visited La Piazza last fall for a segment scheduled to air in February or early March. La Piazza's Mediterranean pizza, made with pesto-alfredo sauce, fresh mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes and topped with feta cheese, was a hit.

Fieri also was served other pizza combinations and baked spaghetti pie. He proclaimed that La Piazza has "some of the best pizza in town."

Vito & Nick's Pizza in Chicago, IL.

Vito and Nick are excited to announce their 7 minutes of fame will air Monday January 12th, 2009, claiming to have the best thin crust pizza anywhere.
