Guy Fieri makes second appearance on Letterman

Guy Fieri is scheduled for his second appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman (website) on Monday, November 2, 2009. Also on the show: Julia Louis-Dreyfus from the CBS comedy series The New Adventures of Old Christine and Carrie Underwood.

The last time Guy Fieri made an appearance on Letterman's show, he demonstrated "The Hunch."

But I think Guy Fieri has much more to talk about this time. His new book, More Diners, Drive-ins and Dives - A Drop-Top Culinary Cruise Through America's Finest and Funkiest Joints (Harper Collins), is officially released on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. To promote the book, Guy has two scheduled book-signing appearances:

Monday, November 02, 2009
BARNES & NOBLE
395 Route 3 E Clifton, NJ 07014
(973) 779-5500

Tuesday, November 03, 2009
BORDERS BOOKS
10 Columbus Circle New York, NY 10019
212-823-9775

Moreover, Guy Fieri autographed editions of the new book are now available for pre-order on guyfieri.com.

And speaking of new products, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Season 3 is now available on DVD. Check amazon.

Guy Fieri has two appearances scheduled in the next two weeks: the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show in Washington, D.C., November 7, 2009 (info) and the Fabulous Food Show in Cleveland, Ohio, November 13 - 15, 2009 (info).

Guy's Knuckle Sandwich Series of Ergo Chef Knives (info) will be released at the end of November, and the Guy Fieri Road Show (info) kicks off November 17.

Really, I can barely keep up ....

I never said this was a serious blog ....

First entry by Epic Portions, Adventures in Food.

And this second entry, by Consumed and Obsessed

which continues with "America's only living Dragonball-Z character, Guy Fieri ..."

I just about rolled off my chair, laughing.

Then there's this Guy Fieri puppet, one of three wishing Sammi a happy birthday on YouTube (video here). Haha. Yup! Someone took the time to make "Guy Fiery" puppet, along with a French Toast and a Quesadilla. I think this wins the 'Dorable Award' for the week.

Speaking of Food Network artistic impersonations, and because the holiday season will be here before you know it, that's right: from the FN Dish, Food Network Star gingerbread cookies.

I think Guy Fieri looks delicious. Click images to be redirected to their respective blog posts. Life's short! Draw, paint, make puppets and frost cookies. Do it now; it all goes by so quickly. Haha, enjoy.

Guy Fieri on DIY's Garage Mahal show

Guy Fieri on DIY Network's Garage Mahal Monday, November 9th at 10:30pm/9:30c, with Brian Corsetti.

Click here to watch the full, 20-minute episode of Garage Mahal with Guy Fieri on DIY.

Guy Fieri, Food Network's superstar chef, is one busy fella. That's why the Garage Mahal team has come to help him turn his bare garage into a sleek, eclectic space complete with an incredible bar on wheels, diamond plate wainscoting, and a half ton of auto parts including vintage car hoods that raise to reveal flat screen TV's. In the end this garage is transformed into a functional and unique space that is 100% Guy Fieri.

Check Garage Mahal's Guy Fieri's Garage episode page for future air dates and times.

For Autoweek's take on the new garage, click here to read their article and review. They say "The folks from Unique Garage, a company that creates cabinets with custom-image fronts, built a wall's worth of storage whose designs were Fieri's own unique Joe Leonard-drawn tattoos."

More info on Guy Fieri's Tailgate Warriors

*Update* Guy Fieri is looking for more Tailgate Warriors for the 2010 NFL season.

Tailgate Warriors premieres on Saturday. Here's a bit more information on the show.

Tailgating fans were called to Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills, on August 15, 2009 for an NFL pre-season game against the Chicago Bears. Two tailgating teams were pitted against each other on the blacktop: Conklin’s Tailgate Bar and Grill (Yahoo! group) for Buffalo v. Da Bus (website) for Chicago.

CBnG made the Norwood Platter, Wing in the Pigskin, Four Straight (with scallops), and T.O.'s Great on Sundae (haha).

The Bus' menu included a Blitz Burger, Da Bears Bus Roast Beef, the Sideline Salad, Pump Fake Potato and Superbowl S'mores.

The teams were judged by Jay "The Tailgate Guy" DiEugenio, Ray "Dr. BBQ" Lampe, Maile Carpenter and the host Guy Fieri.

Jay DiEugenio (website) has "tailgated at every stadium in the NFL, as well as numerous colleges, racetracks, and even a Hollywood game show" and hosts a radio show that airs Thursdays at 12 Noon Pacific, 2pm Central and 3pm Eastern on the TalkZone Sports Channel.

Sometimes mistaken for Guy Fieri's dad but isn't, Dr. BBQ (website) has written four cookbooks and is currently working on a fifth.

Jaden Hair, of SteamyKitchen.com, described Ray with "the razor-sharp spiky blond hair, trophy belly, baggy black shorts, flavor-savor beard and a killer watch tattoo where time stops at 5:01pm ... (he was) everything I had expected from a man who carried a name, Dr. BBQ, with swaggering authority."

Ray Lampe is the Executive Chef at Southern Hospitality, a New York BBQ restaurant. Moreover, he is credited with inadvertently naming Guy's BBQ team, the Motley Cue, in 2003. (the full story)

Guy Fieri and Ray Lampe were both judges at the Jack Daniels Invitational in 2008.

Maile Carpenter is Editor-In-Chief of Food Network Magazine (website). In her career, she's been a food editor for Time Out New York and executive editor for the magazine Every Day with Rachael Ray.

This program is airing as a special - if it gets rave reviews, it could be picked up as a series next year. But for now, enjoy the program. Keep an eye on the The Tailgate Warriors' index page for recipes and future airing times and dates.

Guy Fieri found the Next Pork Personality

In April of this year, the National Pork Board called to the public for the Next Pork Personality, and Guy Fieri led the summer-long search by asking Americans to star in their own two-minute video highlighting their best tips for sizzlin’ up pork on the grill.

Finalists were flown to New York City during the Wine & Food Festival for a tong to tong grill off, with Guy Fieri as host and a judge at the event. Guests were served pork skewers with mango salsa and watched the contestants do what they do best: grill with pork.

According to the New York Post, Guy said pork is his favorite protein with which to cook. "I was reviewing all my recipes and noticed I put it in all my Asian dishes and my Mexican dishes and my Italian dishes," he told the NYPost. "It’s just so universal." He continued, "it’s like a great canvas; it’ll take on anything you throw at it."

And Guy's thoughts on bacon? "I can have bacon on anything," he continued. "I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like bacon unless they’re a vegetarian. And I think even vegetarians, quietly, inside, wish they could."

Robert Burmeister of Chow Gourmet in West Brighton took second in the Search for the Next Pork Personality contest, but Guy Fieri declared him top hog in the taste category. Burmeister made a German Cuban Reuben Pork Burger (click here for the recipe), and Guy said it was "outstanding. On the taste side that was my favorite. It had great flavor."

And Dana Johnson of Ripon, California was also a finalist, with Dana's Hog Log (click here for the recipe) as her entry. In addition to their trip to New York, both runners up were awarded a brand new Char-Broil® RED™ Infrared Gas Grill. Nice!

Guy Fieri crowned Kristina Vanni of North Hollywood, California the National Pork Board’s “Next Pork Personality” on Friday, October 9, 2009. Vanni received a $5,000 grand prize for her original recipe: Spicy Asian Pork Tenderloin with Pear Mashed Potatoes and Grilled Baby Choy (click here for the winning recipe).

For more pictures from the event, click here. And for full information, including contact links, click here.

The National Pork Board's press release quoted Guy Fieri, "Not only did Vanni wow the judges with a presentation that would entertain any food fan, but she also brought an 'off-da-hook' recipe that really showcased the great flavor and versatility of my favorite protein - pork."

And of her experience meeting and cooking for Guy Fieri, Kristina said in a note to me, "He was fastastic! Such a great host and a wonderful person." She continued, "Guy was wonderful, and we all had a pork-tastic time!"

Time spent under chef Alan Wong at Mauna Lani Bay Resort and Bungalows, as sous chef at Emeril's Restaurant in New Orleans and executive chef at Sam Choy's Diamond Head Restaurant, has honed his skills, which he couples with an understanding of Island tastes.

3 or 4 pork shoulder blade steaks, 1/2 to 3/4-inch thick (3 1/2 to 4 pounds total)
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/4 cup garlic, peeled, smashed and slightly chopped
5 teaspoons lemon zest, grated
5 tablespoons lemon juice
4 tablespoons capers, drained
5 teaspoons Dijon-style mustard
2 1/4 teaspoons black pepper, cracked
1 1/4 teaspoons fine sea salt
1 tablespoon Italian parsley, chopped

Cooking Directions: Combine wine, garlic, lemon peel and 3 tablespoons juice, 3 tablespoons capers, mustard, 2 teaspoons cracked pepper and 1 teaspoon salt in small bowl.

Place pork in single layer in 2 1/2 gallon resealable plastic bag or large glass baking dish. Pour wine mixture over pork. If using bag, close bag to seal. Turn bag or pork over in dish to coat with wine marinade. Marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature or in refrigerator for up to 1 hour,

Preheat gas grill to medium-high heat for direct grilling. Remove steaks from marinade, brushing off any large pieces and reserving marinade. Transfer marinade to small sauce pan. Bring to boil; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 1 minute; remove from heat.

Grill steaks, uncovered, for 6 to 10 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F, turning steaks over halfway during grilling and brushing occasionally with reserved marinade. Transfer steaks to carving board. Loosely cover with foil; let rest for 5 minutes.

Remove foil. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Top with remaining 1 tablespoon lemon juice, parsley and remaining 1 tablespoon capers. Cut into serving pieces before serving.

2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard

Cooking Directions: For honey mustard sauce, combine beer, honey and mustard in a small sauce pan. Bring to boil; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 2 to 4 minutes or until slightly thickened and reduced by 1/3. Stir occasionally to prevent over boiling. Makes about 1/4 cup.

If necessary, trim and discard surface fat from pork chops. Place pork chops on cutting board. Cover chops with plastic wrap. Starting from the narrow end of each pork chop, pound chops to 1/4 inch thickness using the flat side of a meat mallet. Remove plastic wrap.

Near a narrow end of each flattened pork chop, layer 1 tablespoon of roasted pepper, 1 tablespoon artichoke hearts, 2 teaspoons cream cheese, 2 or 3 slices of jalapeno, and 2 or 3 slices of strawberries. Tightly roll pork to enclose filling ingredients. Set rolls aside.

Place a large piece of plastic wrap on work surface. Lay out 4 slices of bacon by placing them 1/4 inch on top of each other in a shingled fashion. Near a short edge of the shingled bacon, place 1 pork roll. Using the plastic wrap to help lift bacon, roll bacon around pork roll. Remove plastic wrap and set bacon-wrapped pork roll aside. Repeat wrapping remaining pork rolls with remaining bacon.

Preheat gas grill to medium heat for direct grilling. Cut two 14 x 16 inch pieces of heavy foil. Place 2 pork rolls, end to end with seam sides down, on center of each piece of foil. Drizzle balsamic vinegar evenly over pork rolls. To make packets, bring up 2 opposite sides of foil; fold down to close, making 2 or 3 tight folds. Fold remaining opposite ends to close. Place foil packets, folded seam up, on grill rack. Close lid and grill for 20 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.

Remove foil packets from grill and remove foil from pork rolls; discard juices and foil. Return pork rolls to grill, brush with mustard sauce. Continue grilling, uncovered for 2 to 4 minutes or until bacon is crisp, turning occasionally (watch carefully, bacon drippings may cause flames).

Transfer pork rolls to carving board. Loosely cover with foil; let rest for 5 minutes. Cut into 3/4 inch thick slices; serve with remaining mustard sauce.

Moreover, the Next Pork Personality has been crowned by Guy Fieri. Kristina Vanni of North Hollywood, CA, has been named the National Pork Board's "Next Pork Personality" after a live tong-to-tong grilling showdown at the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival.

Vanni walked away with the $5,000 grand prize for her PORK-tastic performance demonstrating her original "Spicy Asian Pork Tenderloin with Pear Mashed Potatoes and Grilled Baby Bok Choy" recipe.

"Not only did Vanni wow the judges with a presentation that would entertain any food fan, but she also brought an 'off-da-hook' recipe that really showcased the great flavor and versatility of my favorite protein - pork," Fieri said.

As YouTube vidoes go, this is a rather long one but worth watching. Great clip from 5:43 to 7:15, of Guy practicing his lines before shooting the opening introduction to Big Daddy's BarB-Q's segment for Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The episode has a holiday theme, so I'd expect it to air mid to late December.

Shot 10/6/09 at Big Daddy's BarB-Q, Fairbanks Alaska. It was an amazing experience but we're glad it's over. You wouldn't believe the hours of work that go into getting ready for and shooting this thing.

No one expects Guy Fieri to be super human, me least of all. I exchange messages with dozens (hundreds?) of exuberant fans, and I get messages expressing disappointment in the man's behaviors too.

thc1972 tweeted, "Apparently @ChefGuyFieri has been and gone here in Fairbanks. A friend told him she was a big fan and he blew her off. Now she's not. Idiot.... She's a server at a place he was at - she said 'I'm a fan, watch all your shows.' She wasn't looking for conversation ... and he looked at her and sneered 'that's nice.' 'Thank you' would have made her happy."

Indeed.

In Guy Fieri's Chefography, Guy's mother made a comment towards the end of the show; I don't have the exact quote. She said, if I ever hear about Guy not being nice to someone ....

Fans lift celebrities up. We're also the first ones to keep them humble. Penny, it's time to have that talk with Guy. Again.

Guy Fieri considers TV series based on Road Show

The New York Daily News recently reported that "Guy Fieri may expand his portfolio of shows on the Food Network with a reality-type project."

The article went on to say that Guy and the Food Network are considering a six-episode series based on the upcoming Guy Fieri Road Show, specifically about life on the road, presumably about what it's like to travel from coast to coast in two tour buses with friends, camera crews and roadies over a 4-week period from November 17 to December 19, 2009.

And what do fans say? Comments are mixed, as they always are where Guy Fieri is concerned. I think that if the show is about FOOD on the road, travel stops, roadside picnics and RV cooking, then it could be a great show and would belong on the Food Network.

There are so many people who live their lives on the road: truckers certainly, but also salesmen, comedians, entertainers, music groups and bands, high school football teams, ..., not to mention the many people who live in their motor homes, traveling from Diner to Drive-in to Dive, following Guy's footsteps. There's a market out there.

Think of it as a show that combines the concepts of campground cooking with tailgate cooking, all while moving at 75 mph down an Interstate.

Guy and Food Network executives, if you move forward with this "reality" concept, make it about the food, not about the Road Show, the daily lives of middle-aged men on tour buses, screaming fans nor the tour itself. If that's what you had in mind, maybe shop it out to the Travel Channel.

Rock-Star chefs draw fans with live performances

Recently, the Wall Street Journal posted an article on the increasingly popular trend of live celebrity chef entertainment. Here is an edited version of the full article.

To prepare for his first live national tour this fall, Guy Fieri sought advice about living on the road from members of AC/DC ("Take care of yourself, man," was one band mate's counsel) and rocker Sammy Hagar, who recommended voice coaching.

He commissioned a black, red and silver stage set that can shoot flames, specified in his contract that his dressing room must be stocked with Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and lectured his roadies about "not partying until the next town" on the tour bus, he says.

Fieri's show will consist of him making things like jambalaya sandwiches (recipe) at 21 concert venues around the country, in spaces with up to 5,500 seats.

To increase the likelihood of a profitable effort, Guy Fieri's tour is booked in the markets where he gets the highest ratings, such as Philadelphia and the Southeast, say Mr. Fieri's agents at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment.

Mr. Fieri says he realized he could take his show on the road last February while performing for free at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. [Note: 'free' is relative. If I understand correctly, Guy Fieri was not paid for his appearance at South Beach. However, ticket holders did have to pay for admittance to the performance. ~D] When Mr. Fieri's blender malfunctioned, he improvised by stirring a frozen margarita vigorously with a pair of tongs—generating wild applause.

A team of William Morris talent agents attending Mr. Fieri's performance took notice. "People were standing on their chairs, screaming," says Michele Bernstein, an agent who usually works with acts such as Nine Inch Nails and Pearl Jam. Returning to her office, she began calling theater owners and event promoters.

Mr. Fieri's tour will start Nov. 17 in Lowell, Mass., and end a month later in Las Vegas. Average tickets will cost $35 to $40, though $250 buys a seat on stage and tastes of the food Mr. Fieri cooks. Ms. Bernstein says the agency is working with other celebrity chef clients to find time for them to go on tour.

[So far, I've heard that Ryan Scott from "Top Chef, Chicago" will open for Guy Fieri at the San Jose Civic Auditorium, December 16, 2009. (source) ~D]

Last week, as Mr. Fieri gave a cooking demonstration at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, N.Y., a fan threw a bra onto the stage (blog post). "I looked around and saw that the crowd went wild, and I thought, 'Wow. This is rock 'n' roll,' " Mr. Fieri says.
