Guy Fieri to host opening day at Humboldt County Fair, plus more

First, a note to regular readers: my apologies for infrequent blogging. We're traveling quite a bit during these summer months, and access to the Internet is infrequent at best. Thank you.

-----------------------------------------------------

The Humboldt County Fair announced today that Guy Fieri will host a special Opening Day event this year - a barbeque contest for local rotary clubs, with cash prizes. Plus witness Guy's donation to the Ferndale Elementary School of a new version of the “Awesome Pretzel Cart,” with which he began his career in the food business many, many years ago in Ferndale, CA.

The Fair's opening day is August 12, 2010 and continues through August 22. Visit http://humboldtcountyfair.org for more.

-----------------------------------------------------

The Examiner released an interview with Guy Fieri today about the upcoming premiere of Minute to Win It summer episodes, Wednesday July 7, 2010.

When asked where Guy finds inspiration from past Game Show Hosts, he replied in part, "When I'm doing the show, it's really just the self I got. I'm just bringing what my mom and dad packed my bags. I think it's doing good -- I'm not trying to emulate, but you got to pay attention to those who influence you one way or another."

And on the similarities and differences between hosting Minute to Win It versus Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, "Food's not involved, there's more of a direct camera presentation that goes on.... If you highlight a restaurant and you let America know about their location, or if you win $125,000 at Level 6 or 7, there's a lot of similarities."

And on his Minute to Win It audience, "I tell my audience -- I have the best audience in TV -- this audince is like a title fight. There's tears in the audience 2-3 times a show because it's such an emotional situation." Which is nice, because many of the audience members are paid $8/hour to be there, answering ads on Craigslist.

For the full article, click here.

There was a conference call recently with Guy Fieri and the press (no, self not included), so I expect we'll have more interviews to report presently.

Speaking of Minute to Win It, if you are interested in a 30-second Minute to Win It ring tone for your cell phone, just Email me and I can walk you through how to get it sent to your phone. I also have an 8-second Diners, Drive-ins and Dives ring tone (of rather poor quality, but it works). Just let me know.

-----------------------------------------------------

And The Futon Critic disbursed this press release from Litten Entertainment - "Good Housekeeping: Spring Into Fall" Features Food Network Star Chef Guy Fieri

A new one-hour television special distributed by Litton Entertainment, features "Culinary Rock Star" Guy Fieri teaming up with Good Housekeeping Editor-in-Chief Rosemary Ellis to cook up some delicious family-friendly recipes just in time for the back-to-school rush.

The release continues, the program "is available from Litton for broadcast during the July 13 - August 16, 2010 window." So at this point, we do not know exactly when and on what channel (cable or network) the program may air.

Of course, Guy and Rosemary Ellis have some on-air history together in Ultimate Recipe Showdown.

Guy Fieri supports cage-free eggs

The Humane Society of the United States is praising Food Network star Guy Fieri for taking an important step to decrease animal cruelty and increase food sustainability at his two California restaurant companies.

They will phase in the exclusive use of cage-free eggs at Johnny Garlic's restaurant in Windsor, Santa Rosa and Roseville, and Tex Wasabi's restaurant Sacramento and Santa Rosa (the later, temporarily closed).

"The Humane Society of the United States is delighted that Guy Fieri and his two restaurant companies have joined the national movement away from eggs from caged hens, which improves animal welfare, sustainability, and food safety," said Karin Olsson, outreach manager for The HSUS' factory farming campaign.

Johnny Garlic's and Tex Wasabi's join restaurant companies in California and across the country—from Wolfgang Puck to Burger King—that have also implemented policies either reducing or eliminating their use of battery cage eggs.

"We're pleased to switch to cage-free eggs," said Fieri's Corporate Executive Chef Davin Vculek. "This new policy fits perfectly with our guests' concern for animal welfare and sustainability."

Father and son, on toothpicks and corn dog sticks

Dan Taylor on the fine arts scene at the Press Democrat encouraged his readers to send in homemade artwork. Local resident Al Travasso and his five-year-old son, Tony submitted this photo to the ARTS blog:

Guy Fieri and his portrait with artists Tony and Al Travasso

“We rummaged through dumpsters at his restaurants for labels of bottles and bottle caps, over 150, then painted his picture over it,” Al wrote. “His hair is made of toothpicks and old corn dog sticks (Tony’s favorite.)”

The Travassos gave the finished painting to Fieri last March, but Al preserved the moment in the photograph shown above.

Happy Father's Day!

A featured bit of TNT's "Countdown to Green" pre-race coverage is the "Ponytail Express," a NASCAR road trip with Kyle Petty and Rutledge Wood. This week, Petty and Wood are cooking with Guy Fieri at his restaurant, Johnny Garlic’s in Santa Rosa.

Click here to view last and this years' "Ponytail Express" videos.

Guy Fieri cooks up pork tacos at Good Housekeeping

EaterNY reported yesterday that Guy Fieri was causing a stir in the New York Times cafeteria, but what looked more interesting to me was his stirring up Pork Tacos with Rosemary Ellis, editor in chief of Good Housekeeping.

Regular readers and fans will recognize Rosemary as one of the judges from Ultimate Recipe Showdown.

Watermelon Pork Tacos in Lettuce Shells - recipe

from Food Network Magazine

Ingredients

For the pork:
2 pork tenderloins (about 2 pounds), silver skin trimmed, cut into 1-inch-thick slices
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons chopped fresh ginger
1 tablespoon seeded and minced serrano chile
2 tablespoons minced fresh garlic
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

For the salsa:
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1 cup small (about 1/4 inch)watermelon cubes
1/4 English cucumber, seeded and cut into 1/4-inch cubes
1 Hass avocado, pitted, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch cubes
4 large, sturdy romaine-heart leaves, cut into 4-inch lengths (to resemble taco shells)

Directions
Combine all the pork ingredients in a resealable plastic bag and marinate for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, for the salsa, whisk together the rice vinegar, olive oil, soy sauce and sesame oil in a medium bowl. Gently fold in the watermelon, cucumber and avocado. Refrigerate until chilled.

Preheat a grill to medium heat. Remove the pork from the marinade, pat dry and grill for 2 minutes on one side. Turn and grill 1 more minute; remove from the heat and let rest 3 minutes before cutting into 1/2-inch pieces.

Fill the lettuce "shells" with pork, top with salsa and devour!

In other news .... two Guy Fieri interviews:

WeeklySeven.com posted an article last last month about Guy Fieri's thoughts and memories about his time in Las Vegas and at UNLV.

WS: What is your favorite place to eat in Las Vegas?

GF: When I went to school there, it was kind of in the buffet era.... Now you go in and Bobby [Flay]’s got a restaurant, Mario [Batali]’s got a restaurant, Guy Savoy’s got a restaurant. I ate at Guy’s and it was just a dynamite meal. It was just over the top.... If you go to Paul [Bartolotta’s], oh my God, and I don’t get that bombarded, but we went there and these cats lay it out. … Go to my favorite haunt [from] when I was in college—Four Kegs over on Jones Boulevard and U.S. 95 [That's Italian ~D]. I talk about that place all the time.

WS: What are your plans for a Vegas restaurant?

GF: I want Vegas for so many reasons. One, I love the town. Two, I love to do things with UNLV. Three, I love the town. Four, my son wants to go to UNLV, and he’s only in seventh grade. I think four or five years gives me a chance to get a place going there, get a house down there and establish a little bit of consistency down there before he goes to school. So that’s five. And six, I love the town. Hopefully, it’ll happen.

Second interview comes courtesy of the Rachael Ray Magazine. Guy gives Rachael an all-access backyard pass to his grill.

RR: ...I have a feeling you spend a lot of time out here, rain or shine. Am I right?

GF: I’m a five-seasons griller! Did you know I added a new season? Living in Cali, I’m cooking in the yard all the time. I don’t care what the weather is like. My hair is impervious to any kind of dampness, so I don’t have too much to worry about.

RR: What do you love about grilling?

GF: There’s nothing that can replicate the smoky flavor of char, so when I’ve got the hankering for it, I tell my wife that I’m taking care of dinner. I have three different types of barbecues—a coal, gas and smoker—so I can experiment a lot.

RR: ...Is there anything new that you would encourage us to try on the grill?

GF: ...stone fruits like peaches and apricots work really well. But make sure you’re cooking at the right temperature—a cold grill will slow up the flavor and a scorching-hot one will mask it. Also, your grate should be nice and clean. You don’t want bits of charred meat in your dessert.
