Fan questions, May 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month, I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them. [Some answers are edited for brevity. ~D]

Jodi from Freehold wrote, "Hi, I just purchased the Bloody Mary flank steak from Costco (already prepared in plastic pouch). Are there any other flavors prepackaged meats available? thanks!!"

Our answer: At this time, the Bloody Mary flank steak at Costco is the only Guy Fieri pre-packaged meat product of its kind available on the market. You liked it? According to Guy Fieri's consigliere, "more coming soon," so keep an eye out for it!

---------------------------------------------

Donna from Charleston asked, "Was at the road show last night in North Charleston, SC and had a blast. I was the one that caught that last slice of cheese. My question is, the 6 foot margarita machine that you rolled out, was that a Stretch art piece? Thanks for the show. I have told lots about what they missed."

Our answer: Yes! Stretch made that machine. :) You might enjoy checking out his video of Stretch giving the machine one of its first test runs! And here's more about Stretch, www.stretchsculpture.com.

---------------------------------------------

Jenny of West Liberty, OH asked, "how do I get you to come to a little small home town restruant? it is called Liberty Gathering Place; it is where I work, and we are actually a village and not a town or city." And Michelle from Santa Rosa Beach, FL asked, "how do I get you to come to Florida for the best pulled chicken barbeque and gumbo?"

Our answer: Right now, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives is in turmoil. Two weeks ago, the production company filed a lawsuit against The Food Network for canceling their order for the next two seasons. At this time, no new locations are being researched. For their part, Food Network has expressed interest in continuing the show with possibly a new executive producer. But until such time as that litigation runs its course, everything is on hold. Stay tuned!

---------------------------------------------

Dan from Virginia asked, "If DDD is no longer produced by Page Productions and moves over to TFN for production, what happens to the recently filmed but not aired segments?"

Our answer: The most recent information suggests that all premiere episodes after Monday, May 23 are now pending a response from Food Network on the current lawsuit filed by Page Productions. Previously-scheduled premiere episodes have now been replaced by reruns on Food Network's schedule.

---------------------------------------------

Rick asked, "So how many recipes has Guy adopted at home from his triple D visits? He keeps saying that he is going to cook this recipe at home. Curious about how many make it to his family."

Our answer: What a great question! I'm not part of his family, but I can answer your question with "a lot."

In fact, a few recipes inspired from DDD's have made it on to Guy's cooking show, Guy's Big Bite. Falafel's Drive-In in San Jose, CA inspired Falafel in Pita with Yogurt Sauce, and Voula's Off Shore Cafe in Seattle inspired Voulas Offshore Cafe Stuffed Grape Leaves. Guy also adapted a Holy Haluski recipe from Kelly O's in Pittsburgh.

---------------------------------------------

Heather from Lake Orion, MI wrote in, "My three and a half year old daughter, Jordyn, LOVES watching Guy on DDD and Big Bite. I heard from my mother that you were going to be at Costco in Madison Hts, MI yesterday and told my daugter about it. Her response was 'That's crazy! How will Guy get off the TV and into Costco?' Then, after explaining that you are a real person not just a tv show, she wanted to go and meet you to give you 'a big squeezer!' You probably don't find it as adorable as I do, but I find much humor and love in her! We were unable to see you as we had other plans, so she made me promise to send you a text or email (what three year old demands such things?! -thanks modern technology!) to tell you she wanted to hug you!

"She and I cook together all the time! She's an amazing onion peeler! lol She particularly likes to see you cooking with your kids! Thanks for the great shows!"

Our answer: Thanks so much for writing! And I'm glad to hear you didn't go to Costco - the store had the wrong date! And fans stood in line, only to think that Guy had stood them up. He hadn't. It's my understanding that the store will obtain signed cookbooks for everyone who was there. So glad Guy has been able to inspire you and your daughter! Again, thank you for sharing your story. :)

---------------------------------------------

Sharon from New Jersey wondered, "How can you participate in the Cheesesteak Showdown in Atlantic City in July?"

Our answer: You'll want to contact Frank Erlanger by email, ferlanger@karlitz.com or by phone at (646) 292-1131 with the name of the restaurant and your contact information. Best of luck!

---------------------------------------------

Lori from Lynchburg wrote, "We missed seeing the Fieri Irish Supper episode! Do you know if and when it will re-air? Thanks!"

Our answer: Well shoot! A Fieri Irish Supper isn't scheduled to re-air any time in the next 30 days. Sorry!

Guy Fieri grill recipes from The View, Memorial Day

Guy Fieri was on The View on Monday, May 30, 2011, to teach the co-hosts some of his favorite recipes for the grill - perfect for Memorial Day! Here they are:

PEPPERONI BURGER

2 ⁄3 pound ground beef (80% lean)
1⁄3 pound medium grind ground pork
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly cracked black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup pepperoni matchsticks
1⁄2 cup diced onion
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1⁄4 cup diced seeded tomatoes
Four 1- inch slices fresh mozzarella
1⁄4 ice cube cup
4 ciabatta rolls

1. In a medium bowl, gently combine the beef and the pork. Form the mixture into four 1- inch- thick patties, season them with salt and pepper, and refrigerate.
2. In a cast- iron skillet over medium- high heat, heat the olive oil. When it's shimmering, add the pepperoni. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes or until just crisp. Transfer to a paper-towel- lined plate.
3. Cook the onion in the same skillet for 5 to 6 minutes, until they just start to color. Add the garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes more. Add the tomatoes and pepperoni and cook for 2 minutes. With a slotted spoon, transfer everything to a bowl, leaving the oil in the skillet.
4. With the heat still at medium- high, cook the burger patties for 5 minutes on one side and 3 on the other for medium- rare. Top each patty with one quarter of the pepperoni mixture and cover with a slice of mozzarella. Add the ice cube to the pan and cover tightly for 3 minutes to allow the cheese to melt and cover the patties.
5. Meanwhile, split and toast the rolls.
6. Place a burger on each roll and serve immediately.

Guy Fieri salsas are rollin' out, nationwide

In January 2001, Guy Fieri first presented his line of signature barbecue sauces and salsas at the NASFT and Fancy Food Show in San Francisco, CA. The barbecue sauces have been in stores since March, and the salsas are set for nationwide roll-out in major grocery chains.

Guy's barbecue sauce and salsas are produced by Gia Brands, Inc., a consumer packaged goods brand management firm located in Boardman, Ohio.

As a big-time chile pepper fan, Guy created four varieties of salsa in his signature style. Guy Fieri's salsas are retailing for $4.79 per 16-ounce jar.

Hot
7 Pepper Salsa: Burn Baby Burn
Guy's 7 Pepper Salsa is rockin' big pepper flavor from red bell to habanero and finishes it all off with a balance of tomato, lime, garlic and cilantro.

Medium
Chipotle Salsa: Da $pice Is Right
Guy’s Chipotle Salsa is full of smoky chipotle and the super salsa flavors of tomato, garlic, lime and a touch of jalapeƱo pepper!

Medium
Original Salsa: Old Skool
Guy’s original salsa is his go-to signature salsa, full of big tomato flavor, cilantro and zesty lime with a touch of hot pasilla pepper… it’s off da hook!

Mild
Salsa Verde: Green & Mean
Guy’s Salsa Verde is servin’ up fire roasted poblano and green peppers and backin’ it up with zesty lime and pinch of cumin, this salsa is so “money” it’s green!

Just so you know, these salsas and barbecue sauces are being served in Guy Fieri's restaurants Johnny Garlic’s California Pasta Grill and Tex Wasabi’s Rock-n-Roll Sushi BBQ.

Three of the four barbeque sauces are gluten-free, and all of them are fat-free and cholesterol-free with zero high fructose corn syrup. Regional flavors include:

Carolina #6 Barbeque Sauce & Marinade
Kansas City Barbeque Sauce
Pacific Rim Barbeque & Wok Sauce
Bourbon Brown Sugar Barbeque Sauce

Guy's barbeque sauces retail for approximately $4.29 per 19-ounce bottle (18 ounces for Carolina #6).

Update on Guy Fieri Food, the Road Show, more

Guy Fieri is on the road in support of the release of his new cookbook, "Guy Fieri Food." So far, the road show tour has hit Charleston, Cherokee, Windsor and Cleveland, and ten more stops are on the schedule, today through June 7, 2011.

Allan of Toohey and Fee, Q104 radio, saw Guy Fieri at Playhouse Square in Cleveland last night. Take a look at some of his pics from the show!

Fans are loving seeing Guy Fieri live. The only slightly negative feedback I've received from some is that the video montage segment is ... less (?) ... entertaining than the rest of the 2 1/2 hour show. But the majority like it, saying that the energy, music and laughs are well worth the ticket price.

There have also been many requests for Guy's Pork En Fuego recipe. Click here to download.

"Guy Fieri Food" (HarperCollins: $29.99) is listed at #7 on the New York Times Best-sellers (source). Visit BrooksPR.com for behind-the-scenes information on the launching of Guy's new cookbook.

------------------------------------------

One of Guy Fieri's signature restaurants, Tex Wasabi's in Santa Rosa, CA, recently reopened after a 1 1/2 year closure. Brett Hutchison, chief operating officer, tells me that the first few days have been incredible!

Grand Reopening date has yet to be determined.

The Press Democrat reports that owners Guy Fieri and Steve Gruber spent $1 million to remodel the restaurant. "Santa Rosa is an extraordinary city," Guy Fieri wrote, "and we are sure that the national attention that Tex Wasabi's will generate will help to promote the entire downtown community.”

Tex Wasabi's employs 60 people and conjectures an annual revenue of $2.5 million.

------------------------------------------

Dozens of restaurants are on pins and needles when Food Network recently removed premiere episodes of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives from their schedule. The pending lawsuit between Page Productions and Food Network has put three previously-scheduled debuts, May 30, June 6 and June 13, on hold.

Grillin' and Smokin' was scheduled for 5/30/11, featuring San Antonio's Bun 'N' Barrel, Denver's Tocabe American Indian Eatery and Munch's Restaurant & Sundries in St. Petersburg. Barbequed, Baked, and Brined (repeat) airs instead.

Southern Flavor was scheduled for 6/6/11, featuring the Broken Record in San Francisco, Denver's Bang! and Jose's Real Cuban Food in Bradenton, FL. Sauced and Spiced (repeat) airs instead.

Gettin' Fresh was scheduled for 6/13/11. The episode was to highlight Five Points Community Farm Market in Norfolk, Chicago's Nana Organic and The Sink in Boulder. At the time of this writing, the 9 pm time slot is empty.

Jose Baserva and Darlene of Jose’s Real Cuban Food said they're stressed about the news, and Mark Heinritz of The Sink said, "I can't tell you how bummed out we are. Our script was just finished 2 weeks ago."

Restaurants see a HUGE influx of business in the days and weeks following a Triple D premiere. Owners must stock up on food, supplies and staff to prepare. All of that is on hold, pending a Food Network response to allegations of breaking contract with Page Productions.

We all hope for a swift and equitable outcome.

Fan questions, Mid-May, 2011

Recently I added a new page to this blog, Have a Question? At the end of each month (and sometimes part-way thru!), I'll share what fans are asking and what answers I could find for them. [Some answers are edited for brevity. ~D]

Tracie from Jacksonville asked, "do you ever go to places to eat that you do not enjoy and do not want to rerepresent on the show?" And Marissa of Houston asked, "Has Guy ever been taping and tasted something that he really didn't like and ate it anyway?"

Our answer: Yes, it's happened. And those segments just never make it on to the show. But the researchers do a great job, and those places have been extremely rare, four or five, tops. Over the course of the show, there have been times when the food wasn't quite good, and the visits were scrapped. DDD won't ridicule someone on air, because exposure affects business.

----------------------------------------

Marilynn of Seattle asked, "What is Guy's tattoo of on his forearm? I'm an inked chef too and was curious. Is it new?"

Our answer: Yes, it's new; inked in February, 2011. It is a memorial piece to his sister, Morgan, loosely based on Botticelli's Birth of Venus. Guys tattoo artist, Joe Leonard, recreated it for the dedication page of Guy's new cookbook, "Guy Fieri Food."

----------------------------------------

Kristy from Hinsdale asked, "Monday- May 2- Guy made a cocktail containing cilantro, pineapple juice and tequila. He poured the mixture into a glass containing a chile pepper. I am looking for that recipe...is it available? Thank you!!"

Our answer: That was from the Guy's Lean Green Chili Machine episode of Guy's Big Bite. The recipe was called the Poblano Pineapple Picante, and here's the recipe:

Ingredients
1 Poblano chile
2 sprigs fresh cilantro
2 ounces tequila blanco
2 ounces pineapple juice
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
3/4 ounce agave nectar
Directions
Cut about an inch off the top and bottom of the Poblano and remove the seeds, leaving body intact. Place the chiles in the freezer for at least 1 hour and up to 24 hours.
In a mixing glass, muddle the cilantro, add the rest of the ingredients, add ice and shake 12 to 14 times. Place the frozen poblano in a pint glass and pour the drink over it. (Alternatively, this cocktail can be served in a martini glass.)

----------------------------------------

"This past summer you were in Cape May havn't seen it on your show. Something to do with Hot Dogs...My brother did the art work on the truck and I wanted to see it. He saw it on TV...not sure which show...he is currently battling cancer and I would really like to see your show with his art work on that hot dog vendor truck. BTW..my brother is jealous of your car...LOL"

Our answer: That may have been from Maui's Dog House in Wildwood? Check out this video, and let us know if that was the one! www.mauisdoghouse.com

----------------------------------------

Beth from Mansfield asked, "What was the name and place of the restaurant with whole fried chicken and wings with hot sauce?"

Our answer: I believe that was Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken in Memphis Tennessee, featured on Where the Locals Eat episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Watch this video on Youtube and let us know if that was the episode you saw!

----------------------------------------

Emily from Dallas wrote, "Thanks to Guy and his promotion of National Cook with Kids Day, my daughter (4 years old) and I have planned out a meal we will be preparing today. We have been talking about it for weeks! We started with a trip to Whole Foods Market where we planned out a balanced meal (complete with apple pie!) .... We even have ... a photographer who has agreed to document our time together.

"I am a working mom and blogger, and plan to post photos on my blog in promotion of Cook with Kids Day. My hope is to inspire other families to take advantage of this wonderful idea. ...Sincere thanks to Guy Fieri!"

Our reply: What a great story! Do please keep in touch about your blog post so we can share it too?

----------------------------------------

Eileen from San Francisco wrote, "We are looking to buy an outdoor grill in the $1500 price range. What grill would Guy recommend buying? There is just so much out there to choose from and after watching his shows religiously, I thought, 'Guy's gotta know!'"

Our answer: Guy loves grills so much, he collects them. :) His top recommendation is the Vidalia Grill, and the Vidalia Grill Model 440 is just about in your price range. Best of luck!

7th most successful American chef, Guy Fieri

By consulting various websites and databases, researchers at The Daily Meal considered net worth and salary estimates of American chef's personal income for 2010. They compiled their list of the 25 most successful chefs, listing Wofgang Puck at #1, Paula Deen at #5 and Guy Fieri at #7.

They write
The winner of Season Two of The Next Food Network Star is a powerhouse, a celebrity whose “krew” calls him ‘The Guid” (as in "guido"). The host of Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and NBC’s Minute to Win It has five restaurants, two New York Times bestsellers, estimated book sales of an estimated $1.5 million, lines of apparel and products, a hectic schedule of lucrative public appearances, bodyguards who flank him at public appearances, and a hairstyle as distinctive in its own way as Donald Trump's.

msnbc.msn.com shares Guy Fieri tips for budget entertaining on Memorial Day Weekend.

TheOtherPaper.com wrote a very nice interview and article about the upcoming Guy Fieri Food Road Show in Ohio.

"Man, it's crazy," he said via telephone from Cherokee, N.C., one of the tour stops. "We'll jam some tunes, make some cocktails, cook some food and tell some stories. It's a lot like my kitchen at home."

As for the on-going litigation between Diners, Drive-ins and Dives production company, Page Productions, and The Food Network, Irika Slavin, Vice President Communications & Public Relations, wrote to us: "Food Network will not comment on the specifics of any active litigation. We look forward to continuing to work with Guy Fieri to produce future original episodes of his popular show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

Guy Fieri Food, the Road Show, kicked off in SC

The Guy Fieri Food Road Show kicked off last night at the N. Charleston Performing Arts, N. Charleston, SC, with the usual suspects: Guy Fieri, his krew, and a 6-foot-tall margarita machine. And reviews are positive.

@JonesWorksInc tweeted, "Backstage @ Guy Fieri Food-The Road Show! Charleston, SC loves them some @GuyFieri!!" http://yfrog.com/h29qvbmj

Flair bartender Hayden “Woody” Wood opened the show that lasted some 2 1/2 hours.

Guy Fieri made Sangria Shrimp, but the show is much more than just about cooking. Postandcourier.com wrote

Striding back and forth across the stage, the television super-star chef told funny stories, bantered with his crew, hurled T-shirts into the waving arms before him, and pumped the crowd into repeated frenzies. A loud, thumping music mix that bounced from “Sweet Home Alabama” to “That’s the Way I Like It” and many points in between set the tone for what Fieri called a “Foodapalooza.”

Guy told his "how not to deep fry a turkey" story, and audience members played "Face the Cookie" from Minute to Win It.

As he has in the past, Guy invited local ProStart students to prep and cook for the show. Senior and captain Jillian Reilly said, “He’s funny and crazy.”

And Guy continued his "Cooking with Kids" message, saying, "We believed that processed food, faster food, convenience foods were going to take care of us, as long as we got the caloric intake, as long as we gained the energy source. Well, fine. We found out that’s not working. We have childhood diabetes, childhood obesity going on. Kids haven’t changed, the food’s changed. We have to get real food."

Visit North Charleston Coliseum on Facebook for more pictures.

Note: the Guy Fieri Road Shows at the Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, NC, May 18, and at the Horseshoe Casino in Robinsonville, MS, June 3, 2011, have been canceled. Visit ticketmaster.com for more.

Tex Wasabi's Santa Rosa re-opens

Tex Wasabi's, co-owned by Guy Fieri and Steve Gruber, reopened for lunch yesterday after a 20-month closure. The building has been extensively renovated, redecorated and the menu has been revamped. The restaurant is open for full business today, Tuesday May 17, 2011.

The restaurant has more seating, large front windows and employs some 100 people. Brett Hutchison, chief operating officer, said that Guy Fieri will attend Tex Wasabi's grand reopening mid- to late-June.

In September 2009, a sewer pipe ruptured, causing severe water damage. "When you start pulling things away, we found out how bad it was, and we wanted to do this the right way," Hutchison said.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat visted with Michael Osterman, food and beverage director for Fieri’s two restaurant chains, Johnny Garlic’s and Tex Wasabi’s and Nicole Massey, training and catering director for Johnny Garlic’s and Tex Wasabi’s, who was part of the restaurant’s original crew.

Food Network splits with Diners, Drive-ins and Dives producer

Breaking news: According to a lawsuit filed on Friday 5/13/11, with the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota, David Page, producer of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, alleges that the Food Network is failing "to provide the services of [Guy Fieri] and failing to make payments required by the Contract."

The suit further states that The Food Network would not comply with its contractual obligations and would not allow Page to produce the Series after Season 12, airing now.

According to bizjournals.com, "Page Productions said in its lawsuit that the Food Network signed on for 39 more episodes over three seasons in 2007 and agreed to retain and pay host Guy Fieri separately from the show's budget."

We'll update this post as more information becomes available.
